Akaroa Hickory Bay

Located at the east of Akaroa, Hickory Bay is also known as Waikerikikari, the Bay of Angry Waters. It is a hazardous venture to reach by sea thus the only reliable access was by land.

From Christchurch head toward Akaroa on State Highway 75, turn onto the gravel road called Hickory Bay Road. The road is shingle, narrow, bumpy and windy, thus please take extra care when driving.

It takes about 40 minutes to reach the bottom of the road and there is a carpark. Park your car and follow the signs through the farm track to the beach, do not drive onto the farmers’ driveway.

The track is very easy and is only 10 to 15 minute walk to the bottom. No camping, fires or toilet, and remember to take whatever you take in out.

A lot of seal are found on the beach but please do not disturb them. The beach is not known by a lot of people thus it is quiet with only the waves, sea gull and seal here. There is no problem to spend a day in such a beach that is well kept in its original way.
