Akaroa Hickory Bay

Located at the east of Akaroa, Hickory Bay is also known as Waikerikikari, the Bay of Angry Waters. It is a hazardous venture to reach by sea thus the only reliable access was by land.

From Christchurch head toward Akaroa on State Highway 75, turn onto the gravel road called Hickory Bay Road. The road is shingle, narrow, bumpy and windy, thus please take extra care when driving.

It takes about 40 minutes to reach the bottom of the road and there is a carpark. Park your car and follow the signs through the farm track to the beach, do not drive onto the farmers’ driveway.

The track is very easy and is only 10 to 15 minute walk to the bottom. No camping, fires or toilet, and remember to take whatever you take in out.

A lot of seal are found on the beach but please do not disturb them. The beach is not known by a lot of people thus it is quiet with only the waves, sea gull and seal here. There is no problem to spend a day in such a beach that is well kept in its original way.

Akaroa

Just 75 kilometres from the city of Christchurch, Akaroa nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. It is a small town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region, well-known as a French settlement in New Zealand.

Akaroa mean “Long Harbour” in Maori. Captain Jean Langlois from France was attracted by the beauty of Akaroa, he made a provisional purchase of land in 1838 from the Maori chief and expressed his interest to build a French settlement.

The French interest in New Zealand speeded up Britain’s decision to annex New Zealand. In 1840, by the time French settlers arrived, the Banks Peninsula had been claimed by the British. The French emigrants were allowed to stay in Akaroa and the small town slowly developed and became the French village in New Zealand.

Akaroa now serves mainly holidaymakers and tourists.  Despite the beautiful scenery, there are different activities. You will find the penguin colony here and Akaroa waters are also home to the dolphin. You can also enjoy fishing, diving or go for a relaxing walk at the walking tracks.

Besides that, the local and people who live nearby will come to Akaroa for Paua. As long as there is notice about paua fishing, it means there are paua nearby.

However, remember to follow the fishing rules stated in the notice, there is a limit for the size and amount of the paua catched. Unlawful shellfish must be returned into the water immediately, the punishment can be very painful if there is any offence.

Besides that, put your safety as the top priority and be careful at any time.

Another feature of The Groynes is the dog park. There are large open spaces which allow the dogs to exercise off leash.

New Zealand Ferry

Besides taking a flight to travel between North Island and South Island, another choice is to take the ferry trip which is known as one of the most beautiful ferry cruises in the world to cross the Cook Strait, and travel between Wellington and Picton.

The benefit to take ferry is it carries vehicle to cross the sea, cars can be driven directly in and out of the ferry. Even if you board the ferry without a car, the ferry companies also provide baggage check in service which is very convenience for the passengers.

The three hours trip can be long, but there are outside viewing areas, café, play area, shops, power zone and lots of seating areas for panoramic view of the scenery to offer a different experience while travelling on the ferry.

The scenic view along the journey is fascinating. Enjoy the city view of Wellington, the endless ocean view and the natural breeze at Picton within the journey.

However, enter the ferry with car need to arrive an hour earlier and the car alarm must be turned off during the journey because the movement and vibration of the ferry can cause vehicle alarms to sound.
