One Tree Hill Domain is a park adjoins to Cornwall Park, which is also Auckland’s largest and intact volcanic cone.

The hill top is accessible by foot or by car. The summit gate is open from 7am to 8.30pm in summer and 7am to 7pm in winter. There is extensive city view from the summit.

Both One Tree Hill Domain and Cornwall Park formed the largest area of parkland in Auckland city. The parks grazed by sheep and cattle, gives you the impression that it is at the countryside.

One Tree Hill was inhabited by the Maori back to 14th century. As there is only a totara tree stood near the summit, the hill was named One Tree Hill. However, this totara tree was cut down by a white settler in 1852 and a pine tree was planted in 1876 to replace the previous totara.

Unfortunately, this pine tree was also being attacked with chainsaws by activist in 1994 and 2000 left the tree unable to recover. So it was removed on 26 October 2000 due to the risk of it collapsing.

John Logan Campbell was one of the first Europeans to arrive in Coromandel and Auckland. He built the first house and opened the first shop in Auckland.  He then became a prominent businessman and member of the Parliament.

Campell die in 1912 and was buried on the summit of One Tree Hill as he wished. According to his will, an obelisk was built on the summit of the hill as a memorial of Maori which he expected that would gradually die out.
