雷恩加角 Cape Reinga

雷恩加角位于纽西兰北岛的西北端
与最接近的城镇也相距100公里
虽然这里确是公路的尽头
因此常被误认为纽西兰的最北端
但30公里外的北望角的瑟维尔崖才是纽西兰的最北边
但因它是科研保护区
不对外开放

Cape Reinga located at the northwesternmost tip of New Zealand North Island, which is 100km away from the nearest small town of Kaitaia.  Although it is the end of the road, it is often mistakenly thought of as being the northernmost point of New Zealand but North Cape's Surville Cliffs which is 30km away is further north.  However, it is a scientific reserve and not opens to public.

意为“阴间”
在毛利人的信念中
雷恩加角是人死后的灵魂进入阴间的地方
已故的毛利人的灵魂
会循着树根跃入大海中
返回祖先的家园哈外基

The word "Reinga" means "underworld" in Maori language.  Maori believe that the cape is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld.  The spirits descend to the water on steps formed by the tree's roots and continue their journey to the spiritual home, Hawaiki.


雷恩加最为著名的建筑就是灯塔
这纽西兰最北端的灯塔建于1941年
并于当年点亮
1987年灯塔完全自动化
看守员也被解散

The lighthouse is the most popular building at Cape Reinga.  It was built in 1941 and first lit in the same year.  In 1987, the lighthouse was fully automated and the lighthouse keepers were withdrawn.


这里是西边的塔斯曼海河东边的太平洋交汇的地方
有壮观的海景
从灯塔望过去
可看见两海交汇冲刷而出的交界线

Cape Reinga is the separation marker between the Tasman Sea to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the east.  From the lighthouse it is possible to watch the tidal race as the two seas clash to create unsettled waters.


在过往，通往雷恩加角的道路有20公里的砂石路
2010年这最后一段路面才开始有了固化路面
最后的100公里路并无小镇或是城市
也只有一个油站
因此车子一定要确保有充足的燃料

The last 20km to the Cape Reinga used to be gravel road and was finally sealed in 2010.  There is no town or city at the last 100km and there is only 1 petrol station.  It is important to ensure that the vehicle has sufficient petrol.
